ABOUT US

An Empowered Community

The ZWO seeks to empower disadvantaged people by facilitating a movement for a positive social change.

ZWO hope to establish tradition of altruism among under privileged communities, wherever they are. Ultimately ZWO envisions a global communities throughout the world. ZWO holds the vision of a community which is prosperous, vibrant and cohesive and, is ready to face the challenges of the unfolding millennium. Such activities are sustainable only through grassroots support. To achieve these goals, ZWO uses and models the philosophy of distributed leadership and shared responsibility, which encourages volunteers to be the leaders in their own spheres of activity.

The Zomi Development Concept

The Zomi welfare paradigm is a holistic development model. It embraces every development issue, including economic growth, social investment, people's empowerment provision of basic needs and social safety nets, political and cultural freedom and all other aspects of people's lives. While no aspect of the development model falls outside its scope the vantage point is widening of people's choices and the enhancement of their lives. All aspects of life - economic, political and cultural are viewed from that perspective.

There is fairly broad agreement on certain aspects of the development paradigm.
  1. Development must put people at the center of its concern
  2. The purpose of development is to increase all human choices, not just income.
  3. The development paradigm is concerned both with building up human capabilities (through investment in people) and using those human capabilities fully (through an enabling framework for growth and empowerment).
  4. The development has four essential pillars: equity, sustainability, production and empowerment.
  5. The development paradigm defines the ends of development and analyses sensible options to achieve them.
The development paradigm consistently takes the view that economic growth is essential for human development by fully exploiting the opportunities for improved well being that growth offers.

There are four ways to create the desirable links between economic growth and human development.
  1. Emphasis on investment in the education, health and skills of the people.
  2. More equitable distribution of income and assets.
  3. Improvement in development through well-structured social expenditures by the local authority.
  4. Empowerment of underprivileged.
